Arrest of juveniles

As a general rule, the authorities should avoid arresting a juvenile at school. Such action should only be taken in exceptional circumstances. This approach is intended to protect the juvenile from unnecessary embarrassment, distress, and disruption to their education.

When a juvenile is arrested, the police have a mandatory duty to notify the juvenile’s parents or guardian immediately. If immediate notification is not possible, it should be done within the shortest possible time thereafter.

A juvenile who is arrested by the police must be taken immediately to the police station.
