Counterfeiting

Part XI of the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200) regulates Counterfeiting offences relating to currency notes and coins.

The definitions of “Counterfeiting Notes and Coins” are provided in section 97 of the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200). Under the section, a counterfeiting note or coin means any object (that is not a real note or coin) sufficiently resembles a note or coin such that it would be reasonably capable of passing. Further, even if only one side of the object resembles the genuine note or coin, it may still amount to a counterfeit.

“Currency Note” includes notes lawfully issued in Hong Kong or by foreign countries. “Protected Coin” means any coin customarily used as money in any country or territory or designated by the Monetary Authority.
