1. What is the duration of a contract of employment?

Fixed-term contract and open-ended contract

A fixed-term contract is one of a fixed term that expires on a specified date (whether it contains a provision for early termination under some pre-agreed circumstances). An open-ended contract is one without a pre-agreed expiry date.

In the absence of any express agreement to the contrary, every contract of employment that is "continuous" is deemed to be a contract for one month and renewable from month to month (section 5(1) of the Employment Ordinance).
