What types of insurance policies could cover losses resulting from the fire? What types of losses could be covered?

Below are examples of losses resulting from the fire which might be covered by the different types of insurance.  However, the coverage under different insurance plans varies and will depend on the terms and exclusions of the insurance policies.

  • Property insurance (which may also be referred to as “fire insurance”) covers the damage to the building and fixtures caused by events such as fire, typhoon, explosions and flood and protects property owners.
  • Contractors’ all risk insurance covers physical damage to the construction work and third party liabilities (i.e. property damage or bodily injury caused to others) during a construction project.
  • Home and contents insurance cover loss of and damage to contents within the home and protects occupiers (either owners or tenants).  It may also cover costs of alternative accommodation if your home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered event.
  • Life insurance covers any loss of life or permanent disability.
  • Personal accident insurance provides a lump sum payment for death or permanent disability due to an accident.
  • Medical insurance covers costs of medical expenses for injuries, which may include hospital bills and outpatient treatments.
  • Helper insurance covers medical expenses and work-related injuries and protects foreign domestic helpers.

These are some of the typical insurance policies covering losses from fire to a building.  There could be other specialized insurance policies covering certain losses from the fire.  Affected residents and their family members should check what insurance policies they hold and whether the building manager has arranged any relevant insurance for the building.
